We first met Balzey in Texas, back in August of 2023. He was wandering the streets, looking for help, and even though we had no plans to rescue any animals during our trip, we knew we couldn’t leave him behind. He would literally run after our car and show up in other areas just to follow us. He would frantically go between the different members of our team, begging to be noticed and asking to come with us. It broke our hearts to leave him and we were all crying seeing him disappear in the dust behind us as we drove off... so we went back and got him.Since that day—407 days ago—Balzey has been with RARE, patiently waiting for his forever home.
Balzey’s striking appearance is more than just a beautiful coat. The patch of white on his chest might look like a charming detail, but it’s actually a nod to his ancestral roots, which trace back to the St. John's Water Dog, a breed known to be a key ancestor of the modern Labrador Retriever. While the breed is now extinct, many times Labrador mixes have the white patch on their chests, which was characteristic of the St. John's Water dog. These dogs were highly prized for their loyalty and strength, traits Balzey embodies every day. Just like his forebears, he has a natural connection with water and the outdoors, but what truly sets him apart is his deep love for human companionship.
This lovable Lab mix weighs around 55 lbs and is estimated to be 2-3 years old, making him the perfect size and age to blend into an active household. Balzey adores playtime, especially with his favorite toy—a simple ball. Whether it’s a game of fetch or just chasing it around, his joy is contagious.
But while Balzey loves a good game, his true passion is being with people. Whether it’s going for walks, lounging on the couch, or just basking in your presence, Balzey thrives on the connection with his humans. Although he gets along great with other dogs, he’s more of a “people dog” and would do well as either an only pet or with canine siblings—he’s adaptable that way!
His intelligence and eagerness to please shine through in his training. He’s already house and crate trained, and with his quick learning ability, he’s ready for more.
