Meet Jenny!

We first met Jenny when she was at a local shelter. We meet lots of dogs at shelters, but Jenny stood out. It wasn't just her sweet personality and endearing face that drew us to her. She had a severe case of demodex mange. Her skin was cracked and irritated. She had lost patches of her hair. Lots of times shelters are not in a position to care for dogs who need more complex medical care and those types of cases often face euthanasia. And this was precisely Jenny's situation. She was on the euthanasia list because of her skin condition and she wasn't thriving in the shelter environment. We worried about Jenny’s prognosis. Although mange is fairly easy to treat, it takes time to heal—and time is something dogs in crowded shelters simply don't have. Without intervention, she wouldn’t have the chance to recover before it was too late. We knew we had to step in and give her that chance.

However, without a foster, we couldn't help her. All our regular fosters were full and as a foster-based rescue, we had nowhere to put her. We sent out a plea for help and wonderful family said yes! We were so happy to be able to give this girl a second chance. Within days of being in her foster and receiving medication, the downtrodden dog we saw at the shelter had transformed and her skin was visibly beginning to heal! Since then, her skin has healed and her fur has grown back thick and healthy.

That was in July of 2023. Jenny has now been with RARE for over a year. 418 days to be exact. During this time, she has had little to no interest. She is an amazing dog, and we honestly have no idea why she hasn't found her forever people yet.

She can be a little shy at first with new people and places, but it only takes her a second to warm up. She loves to snuggle and be close with her humans, but also thrives with physical activity. While she does have a higher energy level than a senior pup would, she isn't a dog who bounces off the walls. She just loves to get outside and enjoy the fresh air and play! She is more than content to play with her jolly ball in the yard and entertain herself. She would also be the perfect companion for someone who loves to get outdoors and go hiking or on walks.

Jenny is also a great dog to have in the home as she likes to "alert" her people of visitors. She is not scared or upset when she does this, but rather simply sends a signal that someone has arrived. Having her around gives her fosters peace of mind because they know that Jenny is always watching out for them. She also gets along great with other dogs and would do well in a home with canine siblings. However, we also think she would thrive as an only pup, too!

We believe Jenny is a Shepherd mix, but she is much more petite than your typical Shepherd. She weighs in at 44 lbs fully grown! This makes her a breeze to get out and about with her people as she is so small and easy to transport!

We are so proud of Jenny and how far she has come since coming to RARE. We are so thankful for that fateful day when we saw her sadness and were able to find her a foster. Now, we look forward to the next step in her journey: her forever. We would love to see Jenny find her forever home and spend the holidays with her people.
